- HOLDING YOUR TACK

By practicing a positioning activity on a nautical map, the visitor will discover the importance of planning, executing and controlling a voyage to sea. Wearing the navigation officer’s cap, you will locate the elements on a nautical map, measure the angles and distances, and trace the course to follow, keeping or changing tack if necessary.
- BOAT’S STABILITY: A QUESTION OF SAFETY

Visitors will be transported to a unique and astonishing nautical world thanks to a model scale simulating the stability of a ship. They will not only discover the importance of maintaining a boat afloat for the sake of the passengers, but they will also understand the tasks involved for the navigation officer, the marine mechanic, the logistician - as far as loading and unloading of the ship is concerned - and even, the importance of the scubbadiver.
- EXPERIENCE THE LIFE OF A CAPTAIN

Have you ever wondered what it felt like to navigate an oil tanker? Using software called Ship Simulator, you will succumb to the call of the open sea through a variety of modeled crafts. You will also be able to navigate cargo ships, transporters, two-hulled shuttle boats and so on. The Quebec Maritime Institute invites you to discover the pleasures and challenges of maneuvering in ports such as San Francisco Bay or Marseille, and even around heavenly islands!
- KNOTS AND SEAMANSHIP

This workshop looks at the main knots used on a regular basis for navigation. A gigantic wooden model with fittings and accessories is available for practice.
- RIDE-A-BOAT

This workshop is geared toward the little ones to teach them about the importance of wearing a life jacket (adjustments, usages and regulations). The little captains will be invited to board a mini craft after having put on their PFD.
- TRANSMISSION/COMMUNICATION
Transmission and reception of semaphore messages workshop, thanks to the maritime pavilions and the International
Phonetic Alphabet. Usage and tricks to memorize.
- SCALE MODELS

Assembling and painting model sailboats or tugboats with the help of sea scouts. A huge water reservoir made to look like navigational water way (parameters, fans, etc.) allows the young model makers to test their miniature crafts.
- MASTER CANOE BUILDER LUC MELANÇON

Luc Melançon, master canoe builder, invites the public to renew with ancestral traditions by demonstrating how to build one’s own canoe out of cedar and by discussing some of the traditional methods of the trade.
- FREESTYLE CANOEING
Come and admire freestyle canoeing during the entire festival. These oarsmen will surprise you with their imagination and some of their complex maneuvers. Take the opportunity to discuss with them and perhaps, they will reveal their secrets….
- DSS MARINE

This workshop will teach you more about how to use a survival raft. The DSS Marine team will also demonstrate how to use a survival suit in cold waters.
- RICHARD ROY: ROPE-MAKER

Richard Roy and his team will teach you the ancient tradition of rope making used on the sailboats of New France. These ropes, that were made from hemp back then, are now made from sisal. Join in on this unique workshop that will take you into the heart of a historical trade as well as teach the modern techniques to rope-making.
- VEXCEL YACHTING

This workshop looks at the different methods of restoring and building wooden boats. You will learn more thanks to demonstrations, scale models and instructions on how to build and which materials to use.
